“Well, damn-zy.”
Pap-pap hooked his thumbs
in the loops of his trousers,
rocked back on his heels.
She watched,
expectant, but he just
pulled out his pipe,
stuffed it with cherry blend.
Yellow mummy hands poking
into the belly, hands
that she would one day
remember, brillo cheeks,
smell like bad incense
on his breath. And the exclamation – “Damn-zy!”
A sound of wonder and amazement.
And she would use it,
soft under cancer-free breath,
with white teeth and stainless fingertip.
